What GLATUC does
GLATUC is involved in many battles that affect ordinary people in our current society. Whilst supporting numerous national struggles it seeks to give a particular London focus. The local Trades Councils are the key link to local workplaces and local society.
We have been part of the fight against austerity and attacks on key gains workers have made in the past – on the NHS, on housing provision, on education, on provision for the young and the old. We have supported the fights for equality and against those who want to try and divide us through racism.
A core role is supporting workers who are fighting for their jobs, for decent pay and condition and for proper health and safety. GLATUC has been involved in such battles going back to the 1970s to today. It is a roll of honour covering battles like the Pentonville 5, the miners strikes, Trico 1974s battle for equal pay, Grunwick strike 1976-1978, more recently the Junior Doctors, railway workers, school staff and support throughout London trades councils opposing the war in Gaza.
Recently we have backed many battles around Covid, the Grenfell fire, at Heathrow airport, in the transport sector, in schools, in the NHS. We have joined the struggles to change our society to one run for the majority of us not the small number of mega-rich who seek to make money out of us at every turn.
We have supported the call for a society that protects the environment but through a transformation process that ensures ordinary people don’t lose out.
GLATUC AGM
GLATUC holds an AGM in February of each year. The online meeting covers all the administrative matters of GLATUC including the election of officers, executive committee members, nominations for various regional committees and other TUC bodies and amendments to rules and standing orders.
The issues covered in meetings include the rebuilding of trades councils, the support by GLATUC and trades councils to various disputes such as for example recently the closure of Crown Post Offices, the fight against the rise of far right, and supporting striking school staff.
Delegates from across London hear speakers at the AGMs or at the monthly meeting GLATUC detailing various disputes and campaigns across London.
