GLATUC paid tribute to Kurdish leader Mehmet Aksoy

GLATUC was represented along with the London May Day Committee at the funeral of Mehmet Aksoy in Haringey on November 10 in the London Kurdish Community Centre. Mehmet had been a prominent leader in the Kurdish community, including in Halkevi. He had been a strong supporter of London May Day. He was renowned as a film maker and was in Syria filming the Kurdish fighters.

As the world watched closely while the Kurdish people fought and defeated ISIS in Syria and Iraq, Mehmet Aksoy, a long-time activist and cherished leader of the Kurdish community in the UK, went to Syria in June 2017 to document this resistance. He was killed in an ambush by ISIS who stormed a compound just outside of Raqqa on Tuesday 26th September 2017. His body was returned to the U.K. on Wednesday 25th October.
